BOOK REVIEWS shows you in detail how to take advantage of the free publicity
available to books from the pre-publication galleys to a continuing review
program. Book reviews are your least expensive and most effective form
of book promotion. Reviews are not hard to get if you follow the unwritten
(until now) rules. This Report provides paint-by-the-numbers instructions
for making galleys and describes in a detailed action plan how to set
up a review program so your books will be reviewed again and again. It
covers pre-publication reviews, early reviews, retail reviews, and continuing
reviews with examples of the packages for each. The Report even tells
you what to do with the reviews after you receive them. Complete with
lists of major reviewers and sources for the rest. Examples and resources.

MAKE YOUR BOOK WORTH THE MONEY
Size matters.
If your book is under 100 pages, it will not command the price you must get for your work. But do not pad your work with unnecessary extra writing.
To lengthen your book, add resources to the Appendix: List other relevant books, videos, courses, mailing lists, associations, suppliers, etc. Now your book becomes a valuable reference.
Other ways to lengthen the book—while making it more valuable and more interesting—is to add quotations, stories and illustrations to the pages and/or summaries at the end of each chapter. Be sure to lay out the pages with plenty of white space.
Leigh Cohn took three of his wife’s 30-page pamphlets on bulimia and combined them into a single book. They added resources, a two-week program to stop bingeing and a guide for support groups. Lindsey Hall’s 160-page Bulimia; a Guide to Recovery has been through five revised editions for more than 100,000 copies in print.
Since then, they have written nine books, established their own publishing
company with more than 20 titles currently in print, launched an eating
disorder resource catalog, and published a clinical newsletter.

Here is something funny we have found on books, writing, publishing, authors and/or words. If you have a laugh to share, please send it to DanPoynter@ParaPublishing.com
A. "IT USED TO BE ONLY DEATH AND TAXES WERE INEVITABLE.
Now, of course, there's shipping and handling, too."
Dennis Janovich
Washington Mercantile Publishing Co.
B. AUTHORS SUSCEPTIBLE TO DREADED PBS
"PBS" not considered fatal.
PBS, short for Post Book Syndrome, has struck this first time author. Preliminary reports indicate that PBS can strike at any time, though it is most often seen in the first 6 weeks after publication. It is marked by feelings of fatigue, avoidance and irritability, excessive TV –watching, ice cream eating and pajama-wearing. It also can include memory problems, such as beginning to plan for your next book and “forgetting” to think about selling the first one.
Precipitating factors for PBS appear to be related to high energy and motivation in the pre-publication stage. PBS sufferers have normally enjoyed the fast paced months of writing and editing and layout and graphics and pre-publication publicity. The days following publication are noticeably….flat.
Thankfully, PBS IS curable, as it frequently disappears with the arrival
of monies from the first group of book sales. At this time, PBS gives
way to SMB (sell more books!) [which will be the subject of another article.]
The best way to endure PBS? Give into it. Stay in your pajamas; grab your
remote control and your favorite Ben & Jerry’s flavor. Watch
TV. At least until the deposit clears.
